The World Muay Thai Federation (WMF) hereby announces the cancellation of the 16th Asian Open Muay Thai Championship, originally scheduled to take place in India in 2025.
This decision follows the tragic terror attack that occurred on 22 April 2025 in Pahalgam, Kashmir, where 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen lost their lives. The WMF Executive Board, after careful consideration and consultations with national federations and relevant stakeholders, has determined that the current regional security situation poses significant risks to the safety of our athletes, officials, and members.
On 4 May 2025, during an official video conference, WMF General Secretary Mr. Mohmad Jallali and WMF General Director Kru Luca informed participating nations that multiple countries had expressed concerns and confirmed their withdrawal from the event. Subsequently, on 6 May 2025, WMF President General Akachai officially announced the cancellation of the championship until further notice.
The WMF acknowledges the extensive preparations undertaken by Golden Mongkhon International, the designated local organizing body in India. We recognize their dedicated efforts, including the production of event medals and the full payment for the event venue. Their professionalism and commitment to delivering a world-class championship are deeply appreciated.
As the governing body of international Muay Thai, the WMF remains steadfast in prioritizing the safety and well-being of all members of our global community. While the Asian Championship for this year will not proceed, the WMF will continue to focus on upcoming continental events, including the European Championship in October and other Pan-American and continental competitions.
We remain hopeful that India will have the opportunity to host the Asian Championship in the future, and we look forward to continued collaboration with all member federations.
We thank our global Muay Thai family for its understanding, cooperation, and unwavering support.
